What is this?
Tortoise is an underground fine-dining restaurant in San Diego, California. It's not a pop-up in a traditional sense, in that we will not sit you at communal picnic tables, or play name games before dinner. The experience is one of a proper restaurant, we just don't have a committed space.
It is "underground" in that it pops into existence one night a month, usually on a Sunday. Each dinner can accommodate 16 guests.
Will it actually be below ground?
So where is it?
Once you buy a ticket, we will let you know where the dinner is. We're not trying to be cryptic, just that location is subject to change month by month. It will always be somewhere in San Diego.
Who are you?
We are a group of industry professionals and friends who love good food and care about service, and see a chance to bring our version of both to life. The three restaurants from our past collective resumes that more or less define our collaboration is Addison, Bracero, and The Lion's Share.
What will I be eating?
We serve one menu, usually around 9 courses, with wine and/or cocktail pairings for each course. We think it's a lot more fun if it's a surprise, so we will post details and pictures of past menus we've made, but for the current menu, all you need to do is show up and we will take it from there.
As a pop-up, we are inherently limited in our abilities. Individual allergies and restrictions can almost always be accommodated, as can non-alcoholic pairings; please detail your needs in the checkout when buying tickets.
Some seasonal menus, however, may not be possible to be made vegetarian or vegan. Please contact us with questions and we'll get back to you within a day.
What about dietary restrictions?
What size parties can I have?
We can and have sat solo diners, and can accommodate parties up to eight people.
Tickets are between $145 and $185, depending on the ingredients and wine we use for the season. This price includes your dinner, wine pairings, tax, and gratuity. An average meal takes something on the order of 3 to 3½ hours.
How much is it?
Do I need cash?
No. Your ticket takes care of your entire experience, including tax and tip. Additional gratuity is unnecessary and will be politely declined.
Absolutely not. Dress to comfort.
